The Real Human Superpower, and How to Use it
The superpowers we all usually think of are some extraordinary skills such as:
- having extraordinary sight like seeing through walls
- having the ability to become invisible
- having the ability to do strings like spiders (spiderman)
- having the ability to shrink to be like ant in size (antman)
- having the powers of wish granting like a god or magic lantern/pot
Too many mythical superpowers, but we are discarding the real human superpowers.
What is the real human superpower ? ๐
Humans have the ability to imagine, and experience things in real world or fictional realities. Humans can make sense of things, realize meaning, and even create the meaning itself. Humans can overcome their weaknesses and shortcomings by dissecting the problem into mini-problems and solve them to solve the whole giant problem. Humans create tools that make their job easier to accomplish.
What is the real human superpower exactly?
It is the power of imagination. You can create a new virtual reality if you can imagine a virtual reality and try to make sense of each aspect of this virtual reality in your mind. You can create a non-real world and design it in your imagination in a way that makes sense. You can create new meaning or concept that other people can understand.
Human superpower is the ability to imagine and create meaning itself and its means (tools). You may accomplish your goal if you can imagine it as a whole dynamic system and build how it works and behaves in your imagination, but if you can not imagine a thing, it is hard to be that thing in the real world.
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.”
- Albert Einstein, What Life Means to Einstein (1924)
How to use imagination as a superpower ? ๐
Great people use their imagination to create advanced tools, creative masterpieces, and whole new concepts and meanings. Here are examples from the real world we live in.
Apple’s iPhone ๐
Steve Jobs reimagined the phone to be just a tab, pad, or a small sheet of glass that you can touch and see through. He imagined a phone that its body is just a touch screen you interact with. He could imagine it with his team of engineers. He achieved it, and illustrated the meaning of iPhone and what is the experience of having an iPhone in your hand. People convinced as they realized the meaning of the smartphone which iPhone shows.
Steve Jobs imagined, shows his reimagined experience, shows its new meaing, people realized and understood the meaning and loved its promise. That’s why you can see how Apple always shows new things as “reimagine this or that”.
- The new macbook pro has been reimagined in everyway .. - Apple Event
- So, we’ve reimagined the browsing experience .. - WWDC 2021 โ June 7 | Apple
- .. so, this is photoshop .. reimagined for touch .. - October Event 2018 โ Apple
Microsft’s Mixed Reality (MR) ๐
Microsoft uses “reimagine” to show a reimagination/redesign of the whole user experience of a product/service they’re showing. Microsoft reimagined the meeting room with mixed reality.
- We’ve reimagined meeting room .. - Microsoft Teams: the future of meetings
Google ๐
Google started as a search engine. So, they reimagined how a search engine should behave, and what factors should influence and rank of search results in Google search.
Google constantly reimagining the systems but they always do it in engineering, technical aspects without showing off that re-imagination of the system to the public (marketing).
Hitchcock the director ๐
Hitchcock reimagined the way to make people watch in suspense by letting them be the hero and the victim utilizing the video editing skills. Watch Hitchcock himself talking: Alfred Hitchcock on 3 theories of film editing .
How YOU can use your imagination as a super power ? ๐
as a product designer ๐
If you are a product designer, try to imagine the full experience of the product in your mind, use imagination aid and enhancers such as pen and paper, or a tablet and pen to sketch what you think, re-imagine how everything works together, how they interact, what can be done, what will be the reponse to every actions, walk through all propabilities and possibilities in your imagination, iterate through the imagined system or imagined product. You can achieve outstanding products if you use your imagination.
as a software systems engineer ๐
If you are a software systems engineer, use your imagination to create the full experience of the system you try to create, sketch it, reimagine each aspect of it, try new ideas and propabilities, walk through each component of your imagined system, try every what-if scenario, reimagine components to face challenges, .. keep reimagining and sketching on a paper or a smart tablet until you achieve that outstanding system of yours.
as a film director ๐
If you are a director, imagine the film and the flow of scenes of storytelling, reimagine individual scenes, reimagine the scenes, ideas, concepts, meanings, re-construct the scene to impose your imagined meaning, your imagined message. If you use your imagination, you can create materpieces like the master of suspense - Hitchcock (the director).
as a graphic designer ๐
If you are a graphic designer, imagine the image you want to create, reimagine its idea, its meaning, the message it shows to the people seeing it, reimagine its influence on people. You can create materpieces if you use your human superpower (imagination).
as a UI UX designer ๐
If you are designing the user experience of a mobile app, imagine the screen and how to move from a screen to another, what can user do, and how the app screen should do as a feedback, what are the possibilities, what are the scenarios, trying the what-ifs, checking the truth table (probabilities), reimagining behaviors, actions, reactions, and events. This ability to imagine and reimagine the user interface and the user experience can differenciate you among all other UI/UX designers out there.
as carpenter ๐
If you are creating a couch, it’s a thing you sit on. Imagine how to design it, how to build it, how to use it, how solid and sturdy should it be, how to reconfigure it to be used as a bed (if you wanna). You can use your imagination and reimagination of the real world to create outstanding exceptional things.
as a video content creator ๐
If you want to create videos on youtube, tiktok, instagram, or any other video platofrm, you can reimagine video content creation and come up with your own system/idea/concept, for example:
- some youtubers focus on comparing similar products or services
- some youtubers focus on reviewing smartphones
- some youtubers focus on benchmarking new CPUs and GPUs
- some youtubers focus on trying new AI-powered services and chatbots
- some youtubers focus on creating comedy sarcastic reviews like Sam Tucker
- some youtubers focus on creating how-to videos and tutorials
- some youtubers focus on live coding sessions
- some youtubers focus on delivering the news of the week in a specific field such as tech (tech news)
- some youtubers focus on mastering a specific program such as VIM, or Microsoft Excel.
- some youtubers focus on interviewing famous people
- some youtubers focus on talking about how to be minimalist
- some youtubers focus on talking about how to migrate from Windows to Linux, and how to use Linux OSes and apps
- some youtubers focus on responding to the public about a field they are expert in, or achieved
- some youtubers focus on sharing the experience of their tours, voyages and tourism
- some youtubers focus on publish “dev log” which is a video about creation of a software told in brief with good storytelling without much code
- some youtubers focus on talking about curious topics, outstanding achievements of other people, historical events, and ancient history discoveries
Final words ๐
Some people use “reimagine” or “imagine” or “imagination” words as “redesign” or “repurpose” or “re-create” .. etc. Some people use it as vague motivational speaking. BUT you can use it for its meaning of using your imagination to reimagine a thing in a new state or composition or system dynamic to create meaning and value. It is used literally (as a word) and meaningfully (as an action) by thinkers, systems engineers, CEOs, CTOs, creators, directors, .. and too many great famous people through the history of mankind.
