Peek has too many advantages as a git screen recorder.
- simple user interface
- easy to use
- fast enough and efficient
- available as snap, flatpak and appimage for Linux distributions with some other native packaging .
- open source software
- free of charge
But Peek is not cross platform. It doesn’t support Windows 10 nor Mac OS X.
Use Cases ๐
I use Ubuntu, Pop! OS, Elementary OS and Mac OS. So Peek works on three of my four operating systems. I use Peek to record gif of actions on portions of the screen, then share these gif images on my websites or social media.
19-12-2023 Update : Deprecating the Peek project ๐
Philipp Wolfer - the creator of Peek - announced the deprecation of the Peek project.
Unfortunately, Peek has not stood the test of time .
The bird’s eye view of the issue is that ..
- Gtk3 is deprecated
- Peek’s UI relies on the exact Window position to determine the recording area. On Wayland this is no longer an option, Wayland is becomming the standard instead of X11.
